Blue Crab art pressed ceramic plate
Get inspired by our Chesapeake Bay! This plate was inspired by the blue crabs image that scuttle out of my way on a beach walk. The crab and water detail are raised. The blue crab plate is hand made by pressing a slab into a “printing” slab I formed and carved to show the image. I also create detail on the back of a school of fish with a small crab in the center. Get a nice surprize treat when you turn the plate over. Both the top and bottom of each plate are detailed in underglaze and flow glazes for a rich finish.
Monarch Butterfly art pressed ceramic plate
To celebrate launch of Janey Monarch Seed which I illustrated for author Julie Dunlap, I made monarch merch.
Janey Monarch Seed is a STEAM picture book offering a gentle story of how to save the Monarch butterflies. (STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art & math) Dana designed the layout and flow of this book and created the illustrations with her husband John Orth. Janey helps the endangered Monarch butterflies as she walks and plants milkweed seeds from Texas to all the way to Quebec, Canada. Interesting science content depicts the lifecycle of monarchs and their dependence on the milkweed plant. Monarch merch to compliment the book has expanded from the plate to include a monarch mug, a spoonrest and a neat series of seed cards that include one with milkweed seeds.
